Equine Neonatal and Early Development Preventative care

The best way to deal with a medical problem is to prevent it from occurring in the first place.

The following are the recommendations of Mobile Veterinary Service :

FOALS (< 1 year of age)

Immediate (within 12-24 hours) Newborn check-up:

  • General physical exam (General health, heart defects, anatomical abnormalities, etc.)
  • Pull blood to check for adequate antibody level (best if within 12 hours, 12-24 is adequate)
  • Dip naval
  • Vaccinate with tetanus antitoxin
  • Enema
  • Deworm Mare (recommendations)
  • Check Mare (adequate milk supply, passage of placenta, body condition, etc.)

Additional Checkups at 3 and 6 months, to assess: Growth, Leg angles, etc.

De-worming:

Every 2 months for first six months and again at 9 months de-worm with a mild paste medication such as strongid, panacur, or ivomec.

At one year of age perform Equine Parasite Analysis, with subsequent de-worming based on results.
